Smile and They Will Love You!

…or How to Make a Memorable Presentation

Grabber: something that will get the audience intrigued and curious about what comes next. Something just like the title I’ve used for this post.

Inc. magazine shared recently an article ‘7 Things Steve Jobs Can Teach Us About Delivering a Powerful Presentation’. I have to admit I was quite curious what it is about so I’ve read the article and then I’ve thought to myself ‘Wait! Does this match with what I’ve learned through my experience?’

Well, the answer is what the Germans call ‘Jaein’ (a mix of Yes and No). Hence, I’ve decided to share with you my top 5 tips about making a memorable presentation.

Now I actually hear that little voice in your head asking ‘Why should we read forward? What does she has to say?’ The truth is what you will read further is the result of putting together hands-on experience via numerous presentations in front of government entities to large enterprises mixed with a great desire to get better and better by reading a lot of materials on this subject.

Now that I’ve got you curious and intrigued, I’ll move on to the 5 pieces of advice on my list:

Smile and they will love you!

– Yes, I know is the title of this post, but it also means that you should keep an eye on what you are communicating non-verbal. By smiling, you will transpose to your audience a state of confidence, knowledge and readiness to take upon the subject. On top, your body will relax and let your mind work better. Take a look at the TED talk of Amy Cuddy to get also the science behind it.

Use your body.

– And by this I don’t mean that you should show up dressed in an improper way. I mean that you should stand straight and while you talk use your hands to articulate the key points. Move on the stage with a purpose. And take a break before make an important statement. All of this you can practice them while you prepare your presentation and rehears in from of a mirror or a small familiar crowd.

Don’t be afraid to be afraid!

– Guess what? It’s normal to be afraid and concerned before you get up on that stage in front of so many unknown individuals. Before each presentation, I feel the fear getting to me. My hands are cold, I start to shiver and feel like running away as far and as fast as possible. But I find a spot in a quiet corner, close my eyes, tell it to myself that I will allow it only 1 minute and then after I count to 3 it should go away. And this is what I actually do, let the fear settle in for a minute and then kick it out. This practice gives a chance to my brain to take that fear and direct it into something constructive, into sharpening my senses and focus.

Each person is important.

– As Dale Carnegie pointed, one of the great desires of any individual is to be noted and deemed important. Hence, make eye contact, nod, talk to your audience, involve them as much as possible, if names are mentioned, make an effort and try to remember as many as possible. All of these things will make the ones that are there to listen to you to be more engaged and attentive.

Passion, passion, passion.

– Above all, find your passion and transmitted it to the audience. Make sure you keep in mind you are there to transmit an idea and to tell them what wonderful of an idea it is. There is a great TED clip about public speaking from Chris Anderson, TED Curator, in which he explains how to plant ideas in the mind of your audience. The secret weapon is… Passion!

These are my top 5 tips for a great presentation. Use them and they will love you!
